On my 30th birthday, my parents gave me my mother’s original engagement diamond — the one my father had given her — reset into a simple solitaire necklace. My parents are divorced. The ring had already lived through a marriage that didn’t last. Yet the diamond itself still held meaning. Reset and gifted to me, it became something new: a piece I never take off.
